Should there be a gap between the bottom of my golf club and the ground?

Golf club
cj asked:

I recently purchased some new custom golf clubs and when I lay the sole of the club on the ground, there seems to be a gap between the bottom front of the club and the ground. These are all irons that I’m talking about. Are they supposed to be gapped like this or were they made wrong?

It sounds like the lie angle (the angle measured between the shaft and ground) is a bit steep for your setup. If these are off-the-rack clubs, they are set up to fit adequately an average person.

If they’re custom clubs, someone didn’t fit them correctly… it sounds like your lie angle should be a bit flatter. With a flatter angle, the whole sole of the club will be on the ground — and your shots will tend to fly straighter, as well.

The last response is correct. You can get clubs that adjust for that but if you were fitted, what is most likely happening is you are standing too far from the ball and compensating by reaching and resting the heel of the club on the ground which gives the appearance of the toe being off the ground.

If you had custom fitting and the toe of the club is off the ground at address, somebody who was fitting you goofed.. The lie angle is one feature of custom club fitting which has to be correct because it is done from a static position. There is no movement in this measurement. One takes his normal address stance and the angle created is measurable.

Yes, you should line up with the ball because if you put the club to high you’ll top the ball, but if you put your club too low you make it go high. I line it up in the air.
