Here is one of my most wanted Halloween crafts for children. It's quick and easy, could be done with a crowd if needed, and is a wonderful technique to run through cutting and fine motor skills with smaller children. Older children can let their creativity take over and create a number of truly off the wall Halloween spiders!

Black paper

Scissors

Glue or sticky-tape

Instructions:

Cut a rectangle of construction paper approximately 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Tuck the shorter edge down approximately an inch to produce a crease, and open it up again.

Turn the paper so the pleat is horizontal, and then cut the paper in seven straight lines up to the fold making eight spider's legs. When working with younger children, pencil in the outline for them so they can practice cutting on. With older children, demonstrate to them how to make the first cut at the midpoint, isolating the area under the crease into 2 halves. Next show them how to divide up each half yet again to create quarters, then the quarters to fashion eighths. There is certainly no need to be overly accurate.

Once the legs are cut put the spider around the child's finger then secure with sticky-tape or glue. Take off the spider again and decorate - either with bits of paper or with cartoon eyes. Position the spider once again on the finger then bend the legs into shape or perhaps coil them around a pencil.

Variations:

Dangle the spiders! Simply cut a piece of black yarn (wool) and connect on the top of the spider with a small bit of sticky-tape.
